Willem Boronski shows the full series Painter on the Road for the first time: eleven stations, with several works at each one. Ink sketches, paper collages and layered paintings, on paper and on canvas. They hang together in his studio in Doorn, the gymnasium of a former primary school.
The starting point is a painting that no longer exists. In 1888 Vincent van Gogh painted "The Painter on the Road to Tarascon", an artist on foot, carrying his gear along a road in the south of France. The canvas was lost during the Second World War. Only photographs remain.
Boronski followed that vanished figure for a year, working with only a few subjects and a few materials. "It sounds like a restriction," he says. "It worked the other way round."
